Books, Glorious Books!

It is Friday - the day I join REDACTED in her Friday theme. Today I am thankful for books. There are few things I enjoy in this world more than curling up with a good book. Some might even say that I'm obsessed with reading. When I read, all the stress of the world (& the piles of laundry) melts as I'm quickly whisked away to the Hamptons, Paris, a beach house in Florida, the mountains of Oregon... there's nothing quite like it.

On a related note, I'm also accepting Shannon's "tag." Here we go...

Book that changed your life: The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren was very good. It took me quite a while to make it through the entire book, however, as you’re not supposed to move forward from one chapter to the next until you’ve actually “claimed/grasped” the concept you just read. I should likely read this one again, now that I think of it.

Book that you've read more than once: The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne – not by choice, mind you. I changed schools three times as a teen & I ended up in American Lit three years in a row since one required it for sophomores, another for juniors & the third for seniors. Thing is? I still remember the plot, but not much more. Huh.

Book you'd want on a desert island: Most likely Max Lucado's Study Bible. I can’t imagine wanting to reread any other book over and over for the balance of my life.

Book that made you laugh: Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series always seems to make me giggle. Especially the first few -- the first book in the series is One For the Money.

Book that made you cry: Gah! The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. Hands down. Movie, too. ::sniffle::

Book that you wish had been written: How to Make Your Toddler Clean His Room the First Time You Ask… And Bring You a Beer & Grilled Cheese, Too!

Book you don't enjoy: While I still read the entire series (I actually liked the story), I had a very difficult time drudging through Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles - the first in the series is Interview With the Vampire. Her writing style was just so. plod. ding. at. times.

Book you are currently reading: Cradle and All by James Patterson, although technically I finished this last night. I pretty much will read anything this man puts out there. Who am I fooling? If he writes it, I read it.

Book you've been meaning to read:

  1. Repairman Jack series by F. Paul Wilson - starts with The Keep
  2. Kay Scarpetta Series by Patricia Cornwell - starts with Postmortem
  3. Matthew Scudder series by Lawrence Block - starts with The Sins of the Father
  4. Bernie Rhodenbarr series by Lawrence Block - starts with Burglars Can't Be Choosers
  5. Alex Cross series by James Patterson - starts with Along Came a Spider. Hard to believe, but I still haven’t read any of this Patterson series...

This list alone includes a combined total of more than 60 books. I should be busy.

Book you remember as a real page-turner: Gospel by Wilton Barnhardt – I read this book about ten years ago, but it has always stuck with me as being simply fascinating. While the story itself is fiction, it is filled with tons of factual information regarding the church, relics, and world history in general.

Non-fiction books that you have enjoyed: Lies My Teacher Told Me by James W. Loewen was a real eye-opener. I don’t read much non-fiction, however. If I do, it tends to be biographies of people I admire.

Children's books your family has loved: Based on shear number of repeat readings...

  1. Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Bill Martin, Jr.
  2. A Charlie Brown Christmas by Charles M. Schultz
  3. Dog’s Colorful Day by Emma Dodd
  4. Dinosaurs Galore! by Giles Andreae

Edit 11/08 - Removed link to a site. I am a moron, apparently, & don't care to increase her traffic - even via archives...

I have to tell you read the Patricia Cornwell books! I LOVE them! I have read THE BODY FARM, BODY OF EVIDENCE, FROM POTTERS FIELD AND PORTRAIT OF A KILLER: JACK THE RIPPER.
She is an awesome writer! I have read FROM POTTERS FIELD probably a dozen times! It is a DEFINATE page-turner!

I have to add another comment. I LOOOOOOVE Eric Carle! I collect all his books! We like reading (or should I admit I like reading) HAVE YOU SEEN MY CAT! And everyone's favorite...THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR!

Beck - I saw where your page mentioned 11 on Top - the 12th is out now, too. I believe only in hardback, however. I read it last month. That series is a hoot.

Lori - I think I'm going to start with the Scarpetta series. We watch "Bones" on TV (David Boreanez... yum) & I know it is loosely based on that series. Loosely being the operative word! Also, do you know I've not bought "The Very Hungry Catepillar" for Halfpint? I may pick that up tonight. On a non-related note, Mr. Right is wrestling Randy Orton tonight. Non-televised.

Hi Kaci. I linked to you through EM's everyday things. Books are just a huge part of my life. Always have been. Your book that you wished had been written cracked me up. And you'll love the Kay Scarpetta series. I read every single one and even bought the cookbook the fictional character, Kay, put out. A HUGE fan.

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks - I agree that was quite the tear jerker as was The Wedding. Thanks for sharing. If you liked these books you'll like Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers (keep the tissue on hand :)
